Marble is a calcium-based stone, which means it reacts chemically with acid. Spill wine, lemon juice, vinegar, or coffee and the surface can dull, pit, and scar — a process called etching. Ordinary topical sealers only slow stains; they do nothing to stop acid etching. An anti-etch sealer (sometimes spelled Antietch) works differently: it penetrates the stone and bonds within its structure, creating a molecular barrier that neutralizes the reaction at the surface.
